negative effects of video games

Learn what the top 10 worst, negative effects of video games are. Our experts cover the negative health effects of online games & video game violence.

Video games have many opponents all around the world.  If you’re an avid video game player, you may be convinced that your nagging mother is the only person on the planet with a vendetta against video games.

However, you might be surprised to discover that thousands of experts in child psychology and development have suggested various adverse health effects that may be caused by extreme video game play.

Negative Effects of Video Games

The truth is, anything that is not used in moderation has the potential to be harmful to an individual’s health.  Consider a recent statistic about video games.

Some experts have said that a child who plays one hour of video games every day is twice as likely to develop childhood obesity as a child who doesn’t play video games.  This statistic seems staggeringly dire.

However, if you take into consideration that a child with a television in his or her home is also twice as likely to develop childhood obesity as a child without a television, the situation becomes clearer.

Even with this statistic, you don’t find parents rushing to purge their homes of television sets.  Why?  Because parents know they can regulate a child’s television watching habits.

Parents must also regulate a child’s video game habits to avoid adverse health effects.

Negative Health Effects of Video Games

That said, there are some negative effects of video games that must be considered by any parent with a child who is an avid video game user.

Some of these effects are:

  1. Obesity: A child who spends more time playing video games than exercising will, of course, be at risk for childhood obesity.  Parents can solve this problem by regulating video game play and pairing video game time with proper aerobic activity.
  2. Laziness: A child who spends all his or her time playing video games may develop lethargy when it comes to other tasks.  Regulating video game play is, again, a remedy to this problem.
  3. Difficulty Sleeping: iI a child stays awake late into the night playing video games, his or her sleep cycle may become convoluted and the child may find it difficult to fall asleep at night or to sleep through the night.  Parents should avoid putting video game consoles in a child’s bedroom, as this makes it difficult for a parent to regulate a child’s bedtime.
  4. Violence: There is much debate regarding the violence portrayed in video games.  Some experts believe that this violence will translate into reality for a child, making the child act out in violent ways.  Parents should pay careful attention to the ratings assigned to video games and disallow their children to play games that are violent or graphic in nature. 5. Trouble in School: If a child is dedicating more time to the latest video game than to his or her schoolwork, the child’s performance in school will naturally begin to decline.  Many parents are frustrated with their child’s performance in school and yet are not taking adequate steps to ensure that their child is devoting an ample amount of time to studies and homework.  Parents should not allow their child to play video games until all schoolwork has been completed and checked by an adult.
  6. Negative Socialization: Some children spend more time playing video games than they do socializing with other children.  The early school years are crucial for properly socializing a child.  Socialization teaches children how to function in the world.
  7. Poor Behavior: Parents who are dealing with a child who talks back, acts out, throws fits, or is violent in any way should take a close look at the video games that child is playing.  If the video game genre promotes a poor attitude, the child should be prohibited from playing those games.
